This piece was created during my first year in Fine Arts at UBC. It was the very first year I actually learned how to shade using tone to create texture and added depth. This piece is the largest drawing I have created to date. It measures approximately 3.5 ft by 5.5 ft or so (maybe a little larger).
My intentions were to show the theme 'Opposites'. Here, life and death are depicted where the importance of life outweighs death.
I chose a scale to help represent measurement of life's importance in relation to death.
I love the level of drama the shrouded curtain provides. I actually drew this without a still life reference. Drawing shrouds come very natural to me as I am free to add folds here and folds there without much thought. I like how my imagination can take me overboard where I don't have to stick to the contour lines before me if I were to draw from still life.
My favorite part of this piece is, believe it or not, the base of the scale's stand (above). This was one of the first times I played with intense highlights and shadows to create a form that truly POPS! I really get a sense that the base is both metallic and cold. There are many different tones here that make the image almost...touchable!
